Episode 3: Fernando Escartiz

My name is Fernando Escartiz, I’m a sculptor and I was born in Mexico City. Years later my family and I immigrated to San Francisco, California, and it's here where I've developed my passion for art that I had since I was a kid. My work is definitely inspired by the Mexican culture, but without doubt one of my biggest influences has been Frida Kahlo.

My mother worked in the wonderful neighborhood of Coyoacán, one of the most beautiful and oldest places in Mexico City. And it’s there where the famous Casa Azul (Blue House) is located, the house of Frida which has now been converted into a museum. During my childhood, my brothers and I repeatedly visited the house, to me, it was always magical. Every corner is carefully arranged with full of objects and it is a synthesis of Frida and Diego and their admiration for Mexican art and culture. I remember the impression that it made on me to see some figures made of paper hung on the wall, they seemed huge to me. Maybe that’s the reason why I prefer creating large sized works.

One of my favorite places in the house was the studio and the bedroom. Frida’s bed has pillows that are embroidered with love phrases and the famous mirror, where Frida liked to stare at herself. From all of Frida’s paintings, there is one that has always called much of my attention which I identify myself with, El Sueño. It is a self-portrait where Kahlo sleeps in a bed that is floating in the clouds and above her there is a paper skeleton, a copy of one that she had commissioned to be made — very likely by Pedro Linares— for the famous Mexican celebration, Quema de Judas (Burning of Judas). And these were the same ones that always caught my attention every time I visited the house. Frida frequently used images of death as a reference to her culture. Here in San Francisco, I sense an atmosphere filled with Frida in the air, for example, Rio Yañez who continues to cultivate the traditions of Dia de Los Muertos ( Day of the Dead) and the influence that Frida has left us. Rio keeps working every year on his fabulous altars. I share the same likings with Frida, the representation of death attached to life, her interest in Pre-Hispanic, and the importance she gave to her bed. The important events that shaped Frida’s worldviews have a place in her bed. For her, the bed was the conception of birth and death and is also the place where she painted a lot of her portraits. For me, the beds are an important object in our lives, in there that’s where our ideas and dreams are born.

One of my largest works was an installation in Redwood City that I named “Los Sueños” (The Dreams) It is an homage to Pedro Linares but the influence of Frida’s bed is an important element. While in Frida’s portrait the bed floats in the clouds in my work the bed emerges from the ground and elevated through its roots. Here in SF, Frida painted a portrait in 1936 where she shows herself small next to Diego Rivera. I see Frida as big, with the same height as the great muralist. That is the reason why in my interpretation of the portrait they are both the same size. Frida said she didn’t paint dreams, but her own reality, and that’s why Frida leaves us a good recipe to those of us who like to create. When you mix your pain, happiness, your lived experiences, and above all your culture, one can create wonderful things.

Episodio 3: Fernando Escartiz

Mi nombre es Fernando Escartiz, soy escultor y nací en la Ciudad de México. Años después, mi familia y yo emigramos a la ciudad de San Francisco, California, y es aquí donde desarrollé la pasión por el arte que tenía desde que era niño. Mi obra está definitivamente inspirada en la cultura mexicana, pero sin duda una de mis mayores influencias ha sido Frida Kahlo.

Mi madre trabajaba en el maravilloso barrio de Coyoacán, uno de los más bellos y antiguos de la Ciudad de México. Y es allí donde se encuentra la famosa Casa Azul, la casa de Frida que ahora ha sido convertida en museo. Durante mi infancia, mis hermanos y yo visitamos repetidamente la casa, a mí, siempre me pareció un lugar mágico. Cada rincón está cuidadosamente repleto con muchos objetos y es una síntesis del gusto de Frida y Diego y su admiración por el arte y la cultura mexicana. Recuerdo la impresión que me dio ver unas figuras hechas de papel colgadas en la pared, me parecían enormes. Quizás esa sea la razón por la que prefiero hacer trabajos de gran escala.

Uno de mis lugares favoritos de la casa era el estudio y la recamara. La cama de Frida con sus almohaditas bordadas con frases de amor y el famoso espejo, donde a Frida le gustaba mirarse.

De todos los cuadros de Frida hay uno que siempre me ha llamado mucho la atención con el que me identifico, El Sueño.

Es un autorretrato donde Kahlo duerme en una cama que flota en las nubes y sobre ella hay un esqueleto de papel, copia de uno que ella le había encargado hacer -muy probablemente Pedro Linarespara la famosa celebración mexicana, Quema de Judas. Y estos eran los mismos que siempre me llamaban la atención cada vez que visitaba la casa. Frida usó con frecuencia imágenes de la muerte como referencia a su cultura.

Aquí en San Francisco, yo siento una atmósfera con aires Frida en el aire, por ejemplo, Río Yañez que sigue cultivando las tradiciones del Día de Los Muertos y la influencia que Frida nos ha dejado. Rio sigue trabajando cada año en sus fabulosos altares. Coincido en los gustos con Frida, por representar la muerte ligando con la vida, y su interés por lo prehispánico y la importancia que le dio a su cama. Los eventos importantes que dieron forma a la visión del mundo de Frida tienen un lugar en su cama. Para ella, la cama era la concepción del nacimiento y la muerte y también es el lugar donde pintó muchos de sus cuadros.. Para mí, las camas son un objeto importante en nuestra vida, en ella es donde nacen nuestras ideas y sueños.

Una de mis obras más importantes fue una instalación en Redwood City que nombre “Los Sueños”. Es un homenaje a Pedro Linares pero la influencia de la cama de Frida es un elemento importante. Mientras que en el retrato de Frida la cama flota en las nubes, en mi trabajo la cama emerge del suelo y se eleva a través de sus raíces.

Aquí en San Francisco, Frida pintó en 1936 un cuadro donde se muestra pequeña junto a Diego Rivera. Yo a Frida la veo grande, a la altura del gran muralista. Y es por esa razón que en mi interpretación del cuadro se la ve del mismo tamaño. Frida dijo que no pintaba sueños, sino su propia realidad, y por eso Frida nos deja una buena receta a la gente que nos gusta crear. Cuando mezclas tu dolor, tus alegrías, tus vivencias, y sobre todo tu cultura, se pueden crear cosas maravillosas.
