A Next Chapter in the de Young’s Partnership with Google: “Latino Cultures in the US”

Today, in partnership with Google and 50 cultural institutions around the world, the de Young launches our latest collaboration with Google Arts & Culture: Latino Cultures in the US.
Latino Cultures in the US is a new project dedicated to highlighting the innovative and influential contributions Latinos have made and are making in the United States today. A total of more than 4,000 items and 90 exhibits are included on the platform, bringing together a rich set of archives, artworks, and stories for anyone to access not only during Hispanic Heritage Month (September), but also throughout the year.
As part of the Latino Cultures in the US project, the de Young connects the rich history and artifacts from the ancient Mesoamerican urban center Teotihuacan to the Latino experience in the US today, drawing upon themes in the major exhibition Teotihuacan: City of Water, City of Fire opening at the de Young on September 30. The concepts presented in this exhibition provide a compelling opportunity for the de Young to broaden and enrich the discussion by viewing issues of immigration and urbanization through an ancient lens, and to connect modern-day Latinos with what is for some their ancestral culture. The art and architecture from this ancient site provide clues for understanding how Teotihuacan’s citizens addressed ethnic diversity, trade relationships, and the management of natural resources — hot-button topics that remain relevant today. Spanning the realms of sports, music, politics, armed services, and the arts, Latino Cultures in the US highlights Latino experiences that permeate our nation’s history. In collecting these stories in one place, Google Arts & Culture showcases how deeply embedded Latino cultures have been and will be to the fabric of American life.

The de Young was one of the first 15 cultural institutions to partner with the Google Cultural Institute in 2012. In collaboration with Google, the de Young offers online experiences of the museum: 360-degree views of selected galleries, in-depth exploration of more than 260 objects from our collection, and an ultra-high-resolution Gigapixel scan of Richard Diebenkorn’s significant painting Seawall (1957).
