This exhibition complements the previous selection of photographs that inaugurated the photography galleries in the new de Young and was dedicated to American photography. The present exhibition surveys European photography from its beginnings in the 1840s up to the present. Images resulting from the nearly simultaneous inventions of the unique daguerrotype by Louis Daguerre in France and the photographic negative by William Henry Fox Talbot in England will be featured. Major works by Edouard-Denis Baldus, Charles Marville, Nadar, Edgar Degas, and Brassai will be included, along with selections from the Prentice and Paul Sack Photographic Trust.
