Depictions of the body within artists’ books carry an elemental power. Familiar and instantly relatable, human figures can serve as guides and exemplars, leading us through stories as proxies for the reader. This exhibition includes examples of figuration from the Reva and David Logan Collection of Illustrated Books in the permanent collection of the Fine Arts Museums. Artists include Oskar Kokoschka, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Pierre Bonnard, Alexander Calder, Francesco Clemente and others, with work chosen not only for its quality and diversity but also for the relationships each exhibits between the design, the imagery, and the book as an object.
