The importance of rain to an agricultural society like Japan's during the 19th century surely contributed to the development of numerous words to describe variations in its strength and intensity. Ukiyo-e artists developed specialized techniques to depict the different types of rain. Here the broad, sweeping bands of gray shown in series with more narrow lines of black evoke a downpour whose intensity is heightened by swirling gusts of wind.
