This powerful composition features a couple in white, their forms entwined as they kneel. Framed by a yellow rectangle, the figures appear small and helpless. Across the plate at left, a large and abstract black shape—created using negative space—looms before them, standing in for the destiny that they face. Matisse may have been referencing and responding to the catastrophic events of World War II, which shattered notions of humanity.
