Woodblock for Mr. Bones
1989
Not on view
These woodblocks, carved by the artist William T. Wiley, were used to print the woodcut Mr. Bones. The raised areas of the blocks were inked and, when printed, created the black image area of the print. Note that the carved design is the reverse of that seen in the print, a common factor in woodcut, etching, and most lithography. Wiley compensated for this phenomenon when he carved these blocks by reversing the letters in the block so that when printed they would appear the right way around.
