The Virgin Mary, Queen of Heaven, wears a gem-studded crown and sits on a throne, supporting the Christ Child in her lap. She rests one hand upon a prayer book of the kind a devout viewer might have used while contemplating this painting. The infant Christ tenderly receives a rose—a reference to his sacrificial blood—from an angel. This painter, named for an altarpiece he executed for a church in Bruges, characteristically lavished attention on the brocaded textiles and jewelry. Flowers painted in similarly intricate detail fill a garden enclosed by a brick wall and rose bushes, symbolizing Mary’s virginity.
