Village Romance
ca. 1652
Not on view
A recurring structure in seventeenth-century Dutch genre painting is the framing of figures in windows or open half-doors. In Adriaen van Ostade's etching, a country couple engages in a relatively tame scene of romance. The woman leans into the light in a vain attempt to pull away from her partner in the shadows, their expressions suggesting playfulness or perhaps an allegory of touch rather than a sermon against unbridled lust.
