Victor Hugo, de face (Victor Hugo, Front View)
1885
Not on view
The Gazette des Beaux-Arts incorporated original prints from its inception in 1859. Auguste Rodin's drypoint of Victor Hugo dating from the writer's final year was one of the most exquisite prints to appear in its pages. Normally a drypoint plate would show significant wear after little more than a dozen impressions. The process of steel-facing, which deposited a thin layer of iron over the surface of the copper plate, made it possible for such a delicate matrix to yield the requisite number of impressions-upwards of 3,000-for the run of the journal.
