Vanneaux et Sarcelles (Lapwings and Teal)
1862
Not on view
Bracquemond, as an early disseminator of information on Japanese style, was one of the first to explore Japanese stylistic concepts in his art. Here he employed the extreme frontality and asymmetrical arrangement common in Japanese prints: a group of birds is positioned in the foreground, and a cluster of irises can be seen at close vantage point. Compare it to two Hiroshige prints that together may have been an inspiration.
