This striking poster was designed in 1944, at the height of the French resistance against the Nazi German occupation and the collaborationist Vichy regime at home in France. Bands of blue, white, and red- colors of the French flag and symbols of liberty, equality, and fraternity- obscure a swastika previously pasted to a brick wall. Nothing more is needed to clearly convey the unknown artist's patriotic message for France to be defiant in the face of aggressors.
