This small red-chalk study, stamped in the lower right corner with the collector's mark of the eighteenth-century English painter Sir Joshua Reynolds, who once owned the sheet, appears to represent a masked figure engaged in pantomime. Jacques Callot used quick sketches such as this to populate etchings of performers and large crowd scenes at fairs and festivals.
