Transformation of Energy, from the Science Pictures Portfolio
1958-1961
Not on view
Although she is best known for her views of the American urban landscape, Berenice Abbott created a large body of photographs of scientific phenomena. She created this image of a pendulum swing using a stroboscopic flash and 26 exposures of a fraction of a second each. The work was commissioned by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for a new physics curriculum intended to help American high-school students compete in the Space Race against the Soviet Union.
