The Return of the Prodigal Son
ca. 1640
Not on view
Ferdinand Bol closely modeled his drawing of the Prodigal Son on his master's etching, focusing on the pivotal moment of embrace and forgiveness. Rembrandt's many pupils paid tuition for their training, and the drawings they created in his workshop conform to his style, making them difficult to attribute. This sheet was previously given to another one of Rembrandt's students, but the dynamic zigzag strokes of the quill pen are typical of Bol.
