The Resurrection
early 15th century
Artwork Viewer
This painting comes from an altarpiece whose central panel likely represented the Crucifixion. Here we witness Christ’s resurrection on the third day after his death. Guards wearing armor rendered in silver leaf lie fast asleep as Christ steps from his tomb, wounds still fresh. The brilliant color, gold leaf embellishments, and angular forms are hallmarks of a late-Gothic style popular across Europe. More particular is the imitation Kufic script—a form of Arabic calligraphy—on the sarcophagus lid. This detail, among others, suggests the painting could be by a Spanish artist in contact with regions of the Iberian Peninsula governed by Muslim rulers.
