Among Paul Landacre’s oeuvre—dominated by engravings capturing the beauty of California’s flora and fauna—this almost abstract woodcut featuring a mechanical printing press stands out. Here, the artist refers to the printmaking process itself, offering an oblique view of his Washington Hand Press, which was found in an old newspaper office in the ghost town of Bodie, California. Landacre refurbished the press and used it to complete the majority of his prints thereafter. When demand for his skills dwindled during the Great Depression, Landacre’s friends formed an association that enabled him to keep earning money for his work; for one hundred dollars per year, subscribers received an original, limited-edition print each month. The Press was one such print.
