The Perfectionist
Not on view
This large drawing is one of nine created by Grant Wood to illustrate a special edition of Sinclair Lewis' Main Street. For the series, seven of the artist's friends posed for the illustrations. The subject of the image is Carol Kennicott, the fictional main character of Lewis's novel. Upon marrying Will Kennicott, Carol and her husband move to the small town of Gopher-Prairie, Minnesota, Will's hometown. Fixed on the idea of transforming a provincial city, she attempts to refine Gopher-Prairie through progressive change, joining womens groups, proposing a new town-hall, and refurbishing her own home. Ultimately, however, her reformist efforts prove unsuccessful in the small town uninterested in change. Framed by delicate rose colored curtains, Kennicott sits with her arms folded and her hand wrested on her chin while staring questioningly out towards the viewer with raised eyebrows. An idealist, a thinker and a dreamer, Wood capture's Carols rebellious spirit through her inquisitive, yet skeptical pose.
