The Golden Gate from Telegraph Hill, San Francisco
1868
Artwork Viewer
Although best known for his pictures of Yosemite, Carleton E. Watkins was also an important chronicler of San Francisco, where he worked out of studios and galleries on Montgomery Street. In this photograph from 1868, Watkins offers a vista of the city expanding into undeveloped land, with the downward sweep of the half-built road emblematic of what Watkins saw as the city’s inexorable progress.
