The Courtesan Takao Entertaining the Actors Sawamura Gennosuke and Iwai Kiyotaro at the Miuraya
ca. 1805
The highest rank for courtesans was yobidashi (by appointment), engaged only through a teahouse and for a whole day and night. The celebrated Takao entertained at the Miuraya teahouse. She and a second courtesan here are distinguished by their splendid kimonos and elaborate coiffures decorated with long hairpins. Also, their sashes, or obi, are tied in front instead of behind. The bedding in the background would have belonged to Takao and been maintained at the teahouse. The cost of such entertainment in the Yoshiwara was very high, yet such an irresistible indulgence that some men were bankrupted by it.
