The Circumcision in the Stable
1654
Not on view
Although Christ's circumcision is traditionally shown in a temple, the Bible does not specify its location. Rembrandt set the scene in a stable, which, given the law of Moses stating that women could not enter the temple until forty days after giving birth, would perhaps be more historically correct. Both the ladder at left and the surgical ritual of circumcision itself would have been seen as allusions to Christ's crucifixion.
