Tänzerinnen (Dancers)
1917
Emil Nolde was fascinated by dance, believing that it allows us to completely surrender to bodily expression. A dynamic sense of movement is conveyed through the texture and depth of this print, achieved by first impressing the woodblock into the paper without ink. The effect of this uninked press, known as embossing, is most visible in the dancers’ dresses. The addition of stark black ink for the second impression compounded the surface texture and added an intensity congruent with the German Expressionist mode.
