The subject of Rauschenberg's portrait is Tatyana (Tanya) Grosman, founder and director of ULAE from 1957 until her death in 1982. It was Rauschenberg's contribution to the press's fiftieth anniversary (an embossed commemorative stamp is visible at the lower center of the sheet). It is also the artist's only graphics portrait, and the only portrait of Mrs. Grosman ever published at ULAE. The basis of the likeness was a photograph taken several years earlier by a photographer visiting ULAE.
