suit ensemble: jacket and skirt
Spring/Summer 2003 Ready-to-Wear

Karl Lagerfeld, creative director of the house of Chanel from 1983 until his death in 2019, famously and playfully reinvented the brand’s codes created by its founder, Gabrielle Chanel. These suits exemplify Lagerfeld’s reinvention of Chanel’s signature tweeds to match the needs of contemporary women, with streamlined cuts paired with simple feminine details and embellishments. Worn by civic leader Diane B. Wilsey, these suits speak to the evolving professional needs of women in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries as their public engagement became more active and visible.
