In an age preoccupied with the brevity of life, the physical characteristics of the elderly were a source of fascination for Rembrandt and his contemporaries. This drawing of a bearded old man seemingly represents a neighborhood resident out for a stroll rather than a model posing in the studio. At some point in its early history the bottom portion of the sheet was cut, resulting in the cropping of the figure's legs.
