St. Jerome Reading in an Italian Landscape
ca. 1653
Not on view
Saint Jerome, who was credited with having translated numerous sacred texts into Latin, was frequently represented reading in a landscape alongside the lion he had assisted by removing a thorn from its paw. In placing Jerome in an Italian landscape Rembrandt was perhaps inspired by a Venetian drawing in his collection. The blinding sunlight is suggested by the white of the paper in areas of the composition that are only lightly sketched in.
