Soirée d'été (Summer Evening)
1882
Not on view
Exiled to London during the Commune, Tissot stayed for over a decade, maintaining his contacts with the Parisian art world as he built his reputation and clientele in England. In Summer Evening his young lover, Kathleen Newton, rests in a wicker chaise, breathing the warm summer air as her life slowly drains from tuberculosis. The etching reproduces an oil of the same subject that Tissot exhibited in his one-man show at the Dudley Gallery in 1882, now in the collection of the Musée d'Orsay.
