Sleeping Venus
ca. 1638-1639
Artwork Viewer
Ancient Greek and Roman mythology furnished Baroque artists with a trove of erotic subjects. Here Venus, goddess of love and beauty, sleeps in the foreground, while her consort, Vulcan, god of fire, toils behind her at his forge. Between them, the winged Cupid holds a finger to his lips, urging us either not to wake his mother or not to reveal her secret liaison with Mars, Cupid’s natural father. This subject, though, is just a pretext for Le Sueur to devote half his canvas to the nude. The brilliant colors, graceful arrangement, and octagonal format suggest that this picture originally decorated a grand town house in Paris.
