Self-Portrait with Saskia
1636
Not on view
Rembrandt and his wife, Saskia van Uylenburgh, pose as if seated together in a conversation interrupted by the viewer. This is a curious composition for a portrait of a married couple, as it derives from conventions established by Italian Renaissance artists for double-portraits of male friends, or of superiors and their secretaries. Rembrandt's piercing eyes look not at us, but at himself as he records his reflection in the mirror.
