Saint Louis of Toulouse
ca. 1320
Artwork Viewer
This saint comes from an altarpiece painted by Ugolino di Nerio, probably for a church in Florence or Siena. The figure turns inward to face the altarpiece’s central image, likely a Madonna and Child. Saint Louis, canonized only three years earlier, wears a humble habit but also a jeweled episcopal miter. These, respectively, reflect Louis’s oath of poverty as a Franciscan monk and his lofty appointment as bishop of Toulouse
