Saint John the Baptist and Saint Miniato
ca. 1400
Artwork Viewer
The early Renaissance witnessed the flourishing of multi-panel altarpieces featuring saints surrounding a central devotional image. Bicci di Lorenzo’s workshop in Florence regularly received altarpiece commissions. This painting originally belonged to one such altarpiece. Saint John the Baptist appears in the camel-hair garment he donned while wandering the wilderness, preaching repentance. Saint Miniato, an Armenian prince who became a religious hermit, holds a palm frond identifying him as a martyr—the first Christian killed in Florence for refusing to renounce his faith.
