Romance of Criehaven
1916
An athlete and artist at the University of Ohio, George Bellows arrived in New York to study with Robert Henri in 1904. Henri urged his students to paint expressively and to seek subjects in their daily lives. Bellows responded to these lessons with vigor, forging a deep friendship with Henri and embracing his teachings throughout his career.Â
From 1913 to 1916, Bellows and his wife, Emma, spent their summers in Maine, a popular spot for artists. They visited the islands of Matinicus and Criehaven near Monhegan, where Bellows painted many vibrant seascapes. They enjoyed the company of artist friends like Robert and Marjorie Henri, John and Dolly Sloan, Leon Kroll, and others who were also drawn to the region.
