Rhetoricians at a Window (The Singers)

Adriaen van Ostade combined two Golden Age conventions - candlelight and the figure emerging from an open window- in his etching of ca. 1668 depicting a group of rederijkers (rhetoricians) reciting poetry. Ostade's construction of this image and its lighting impart an uncanny illusion of three-dimensionality, as both the man holding the candle and the orator seem to project from the dark shadows of their guild house into the viewer's space.
