Relief with Ptolemy I Soter making an offering
Artwork Viewer
This carved relief depicts an Egyptian king, wearing the White Crown of Upper Egypt surmounted by the uraeus (royal cobra as the symbol of royalty) and a collar, while making an offering to a (now missing) deity (or deities). The king holds a small bowl (or censer) in one hand with and with the other makes a gesture of worship. Although the fleshy body, elongated fingers, and facial features of the king suggest a date from the Thirtieth Dynasty (380‒343 BC) to the reign of Ptolemy II (284‒246 BC) in Egypt, the two cartouches contain the name and throne names of the Roman emperor Domitian (r. 81‒96 AD). The relief could have been reused by the later Roman emperor or was sculpted during the Roman Empire while displaying earlier Egyptian stylistic paradigms.
