Reclining nude
1658
Not on view
Rembrandt's etched output includes a number of unidealized representations of male and female nudes, all of which were based on live models posing in his studio. Reclining Nude has attracted special attention because it appears to depict a dark-skinned model wearing a turban, perhaps a woman of African descent. Amsterdam was a port city that hosted guests from many foreign cultures, and Rembrandt occasionally sought out models from among these visitors.
