Raven on the Bust of Pallas, third plate in the book Le corbeau, translation by Stéphane Mallarmé of Edgar Allan Poe's poem The Raven (Paris, Richard Lesclide, 1875)
1875
Not on view
Manet drew upon Japanese sources in print for inspiration with his illustrations for The Raven. The full-page lithographs, showing various views of the raven and writer in a gloomy interior, are composed of swiftly applied, black ink-wash strokes arranged dramatically on empty backgrounds. This indicates his awareness of Japanese brush drawings and the innovative woodcuts of artists such as Kyosai who specialized in depictions of the black birds.
