Processional cross, socle, and stand
14th century
Artwork Viewer
Luxury objects produced by skilled artisans played key roles in liturgical services throughout medieval Europe. This elaborate cross would have been carried in church processions. It is decorated with chased floral and scroll designs made in repoussé, a technique that involved hammering silver gilt sheets from behind to produce relief elements. The cruciform composition is punctuated with five colored-enamel medallions, showing Christ in a rich blue robe at center and symbols of the Four Evangelists on the arms: the angel (St. Matthew), the ox (St. Luke), the lion (St. Mark), and the eagle (St. John).
