Portrait of Sir William Napier
ca. 1810
Artwork Viewer
With
his scarlet coat, top hat, and riding crop, Sir William Napier (1786–1834)
seems ready for a ride or hunt: traditional pastimes for a member of the
Scottish peerage. Although by the time he sat for Raeburn, Napier had already
served in the British Navy, he evidently chose to be depicted as a country
gentleman in this portrait, which takes its cues from earlier works by Reynolds
and Gainsborough. Napier would go on to serve as Chief Superintendent of
British Trade in China. He died of typhus in Macau.
