ca. 1817

Other
Archer Windsor, Earl of Plymouth (1789–1833) commissioned this likeness and
that of his wife from Thomas Lawrence, London’s foremost portraitist in the
early nineteenth century. Lawrence’s free, sparkling brushwork, and dramatic
approach to light and shadow brought a new dynamism to British portraiture.
Sought-after by theatrical and political celebrities, as well as members of the
royal family and the nobility, Lawrence could not keep up with demand. In an
1817 letter, Plymouth inquired, with mounting impatience, into the artist’s
progress on these portraits.
