Portrait of Master James Hatch
1796
Artwork Viewer
The subject of this grand portrait is a schoolboy: James
Hatch, aged 13. His uniform identifies him as a marshal’s attendant in a
triennial parade organized by Eton College, Hatch’s boarding school. Eton
itself appears in the distance at right, across the river from Windsor Castle.
William Beechey first exhibited this picture in 1797, at the Royal Academy
exhibition, where painters could flaunt their talents and attract new clients.
Hatch’s father, who had made his fortune as a malt distiller, likely paid for
the portrait and approved of its display, proud to celebrate his son’s rise
within an elite institution.
