A new addition to Ottavio Leoni's extensive catalogue of portrait drawings, this poignant portrait of a Roman commoner can be dated to ca. 1607-10, as suggested by Yuri Primarosa. An old, possibly 17th century inscription written on the verso of the sheet, identifies the sitter as 'Girolama Azolini' from Ferrara, while a later inscription describes her as 'the wife of one of the Dolsi [Dossi?] of Ferrara'. This newly attributed sheet attests fully to Leoni's insightful characterization and to his confident mastery of black chalk.
