Pont Notre-Dame, l'arche du diable, 1850 (Pont Notre-Dame, the Devil's Arch, 1850), from the series L'ancien Paris (Old Paris)
Not on view
Martial's etching represents the old Pont Notre-Dame, a stone bridge linking the Right Bank and Île de la Cité, as seen in a photograph made before its partial reconstruction in 1853. Through the "Devil's Arch," a narrow opening notorious for wreaking havoc with water traffic, the Pont-au-Change is visible downstream.
