Osen Playing with a Cat Held by a Visitor to Her Tea Shop
ca. 1768-1770
One of the most celebrated beauties of Edo in the 1760s, Kasamori Osen was the subject of more than 40 designs by Harunobu before she eloped with a samurai in 1770. Osen worked as an assistant in a tea shop near the entrance to the Kasamori Inari Shrine in Edo's Yanaka district. Here, during a quiet moment at the shop, she teases a cat with the end of her obi (wide belt).
