New York, January 1939
1939
The architectonic composition of this work draws its inspiration from the visual rhythms of New York City, reflecting Charles Green Shaw’s fascination with urban skylines and the influence of European Cubism. Shaw’s bold, abstract forms evoke the lyrical but also melancholy beauty of Manhattan. The rust-colored sun form casts a black shadow against the mustard-yellow foreground— a sidewalk, perhaps, illuminated by street lamps—and is a poignant reminder of the presence of nature in an other- wise human-made environment.
