Mural fragment
6th century
Like many representations of the Teotihuacán elite, this figure, depicted in profile, is magnificently dressed and wears a feathered headdress, a feathered back ornament, and a conch-shell necklace. The figure holds a bag for incense and pours a stream of liquid ornamented with flowers, likely referencing the libations' sweet smell. An ornate speech scroll emerges from the figure's open mouth. The figure is flanked by cylindrical bundles pierced by thorned maguey leaves, suggesting that the scene depicts an offering ritual related to the cycle of planting or harvest. There are at least nine other known fragments that bear similar imagery; all of the fragments likely originated in the apartment compound of Tlacuilapaxco at Teotihuacan.
