Multilayer conjectural model: S.E.A.R.C.H.F.O.R.
Not on view
Gustavo Diaz’s cut-paper drawings are rooted in his more than twenty-five years of studying complexity theory— the belief that there is an order to the behavior and evolution of even the most complex systems. He works by first digitally drawing an intricate composition of lines entirely freehand. He then sends these drawings to a laser cutter, which scores the paper (here, six sheets affixed to one another) along the lines of his drawing. Diaz then finishes each cut by hand using an X-Acto knife and punches out each piece. Through this tedious task, the final weblike composition is revealed. The laser’s heat is responsible for the warm brown finish, which Diaz sands down to create delicate tonal changes throughout.
