Mother Carrying Her Baby Son on Her Back by a Cistern
ca. 1810
Not on view
Commercial publication required that artists design for specific paper sizes, but artists avoided this restriction by joining standardsize sheets together in creative ways. This composition crosses two joined oban sheets, and its format is therefore described as a diptych. Artists tended to compose vertical diptychs and other strongly vertical formats like pillar prints (hashira-e), which would be read from top to bottom, rather than from the side edges to the center, as was usual in Western compositions.
