Large Grotesque Head
ca. 1622
Not on view
The subject of this etching is a man disfigured from neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that can lead to large, unsightly clusters of tumors. Jusepe de Ribera's representations of physical deformity follow a tradition that can be traced back to Leonardo da Vinci's anatomical studies, which include a number of drawings known as grotteschi (grotesque heads).
