Rembrandt seems to have been particularly interested in depicting the ramshackle farm buildings that dotted the Dutch landscape. This etching focuses on humble thatched structures at the expense of the more upscale country house that is only partially glimpsed in the right background. The house belonged to the government official Johannes Uytenbogaert, chief tax collector for the province of Holland and a longtime friend and patron of the artist.
