Landscape with Travelers and a Ruin
late 18th century
Artwork Viewer
Jean-Baptiste Pillement led an itinerant life: born in the South of France, he traveled to Madrid, Lisbon, London, Vienna, and Warsaw, decorating princely residences, designing stage sets, and painting iridescent landscapes like this one. On a riverbank beside a washed-out bridge, a traveler asks directions of a woman and her companion. Behind them, a shepherd leads his flock into the distance, where cliffs and ruins turn pink in the sunset. Pillement was a master of details: note the tiny water gourd strapped to the traveler’s belt, the brief, dainty strokes that pick out every leaf and twig.
